KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan officials say at least three people have been killed after police opened fire to disperse thousands of anti-American demonstrators rioting for a second day over what the U.S. has said was the inadvertent burning of Muslim holy books at a NATO military base.

Officials says the deaths occurred Wednesday in the Afghan capital and in the eastern provinces of Logar and Parwan.

The Health Ministry confirmed the death in Kabul, while the Logar provincial police chief and hospital director of Parwan’s main hospital confirmed the others. In total, the three men and other officials said more than 30 people had been wounded in various protests.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghan police opened fire Wednesday to disperse thousands of anti-American protesters rioting for a second day over an incident that the U.S. said was inadvertent burning of Muslim holy books at a military base in Kabul.

At least 17 people were wounded in the rallies in the Afghan capital and in another city, officials said.

In Kabul, police shot into the air over a crowd gathered outside a housing complex for foreigners and a U.S. base on the city’s outskirts. Nearby, angry demonstrators set a fuel truck ablaze on a main highway linking the Afghan capital with the eastern city of Jalalabad.

“Death to America,” chanted the angry protesters as they hurled rocks and set fires outside the complex, which is home to foreign contractors, police and some coalition military forces.

The Health Ministry said at least 11 people were wounded by gunfire in Kabul, and provincial officials said at least six were wounded in riots that broke out in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

The U.S. had apologized Tuesday for the burning of books, including Qurans, that had been pulled from the shelves of a detention center library adjoining Bagram air base because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions.

The White House later echoed military officials and said the burning of Qurans and other Islamic reading material that had been tossed in a pile of garbage was an accident.

As the rally Wednesday in Kabul turned violent, the city’s police chief Mohammad Ayub Salangi arrived at the scene with hundreds of reinforcements. Police later said the demonstrations had been broken up and that the situation in Kabul was now under control.

“They have the right to demonstrate, but they have to do it in accordance with the law,” said Salangi’s deputy, police chief Daud Amin, who was also outside the housing complex.

“It is their right to demonstrate. We are also Muslim and we say it was a wrong action from the Islamic point of view,” he added about the Quran incident.

A doctor at Kabul’s Wazir Akbar Khan hospital said at least 10 protesters had been brought to the hospital with gunshot wounds. The doctor, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said one of the wounded was in critical condition.

Several miles (kilometers) away, hundreds were also gathered outside Camp Phoenix, a U.S. military base, and were hurling rocks at the installation, said Kabul provincial police spokesman Ashmatullah Stanekzai. Shots were also fired in the air at Camp Phoenix.

Stanekzai said another smaller and peaceful demonstration with just over 100 people took place in western Kabul near the capital’s university.

Police in eastern Jalalabad city said that thousands demonstrated in a number of separate protests over the Quran burning incident, with about 1,000 gathering outside an American base at the city’s airport. Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdul Zai said six protesters were wounded around the city of Jalalabad and that a number of buildings had been burned.

After the Quran burning incident was made public Tuesday, more than 2,000 Afghans protested outside the Bagram Air Base near the capital. The incident took place late Monday, when Afghan workers saw soldiers dumping the books in a pit where garbage is burned and noticed the Qurans and other religious books among the trash.

After 13 hours of talks, euro zone officials said ministers had finalized measures to cut Greece’s debt to 120.5 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, a fraction above their original target of 120, after negotiators for private bondholders accepted bigger losses to help plug the funding gap.

Agreement on the 130-billion-euro ($172 billion) rescue package, subject to strict conditions, will help draw a line under months of uncertainty that has shaken the currency bloc, and avert an imminent Greek bankruptcy.

“We have reached a far reaching agreement on Greece’s new program and private sector involvement that would lead to a significant debt reduction for Greece and pave the way towards an unprecedented amount of new official financing … to secure Greece’s future in the euro area,” Luxembourg’s Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs the Eurogroup of finance ministers, told a news conference.

The euro jumped almost half a cent, reversing earlier losses, after Reuters reported a deal had been struck.

A report prepared by experts from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund said Greece needed extra relief to cut its debts near to the official debt target given the ever-worsening state of its economy.

If Athens did not follow through on economic reforms and savings, its debt could hit 160 percent by that date, said the report, obtained by Reuters.

“Given the risks, the Greek program may thus remain accident-prone, with questions about sustainability hanging over it,” the nine-page confidential report said, highlighting the fact that Greece’s problems were far from over.

The accord will enable Athens to launch a bond swap with private investors to help reduce and restructure its vast debts, put it on a more stable financial footing and keep it inside the 17-country euro zone.

Around 100 billion euros of debt will be written off as banks and insurers swap bonds they hold for longer-dated securities that pay a lower coupon, although it is not clear how many will take the deal.

Private sector holders of Greek debt will take losses of 53.5 percent on the nominal value of their bonds. They had earlier agreed to a 50 percent nominal writedown, which equated to around a 70 percent loss on the net present value of the debt.

“Given the balanced agreement reached with the creditor group … and the fact that the package delivers debt sustainability for Greece we expect a high participation rate,” Juncker said.

The debt sustainability report delivered to ministers last week showed that without further measures Greek debt would only fall to 129 percent by 2020.

The IMF had said if the ratio was not cut to near 120 percent, it may not have been able to help finance the bailout, putting the whole scheme in jeopardy.

To help fill the financing gap, euro zone central banks will also play their part.

A Eurogroup statement said the ECB would pass up profits it has made from buying Greek bonds over the past two years under its emergency bond-buying program to national central banks for their governments to pass on to Athens “to further improve the sustainability of Greece’s public debt.”

The ECB has spent about 38 billion euros on Greek government debt that is now worth about 50 billion euros.

Whatever its constituent parts, economists say the deal may only delay a deeper default by a few months. A turnaround in the economy could take as much as a decade, a prospect that brought thousands of Greeks onto the streets to protest against austerity measures on Sunday.

DOUBTS OVER COMMITMENT

Skeptics question whether a new Greek government will stick to the deeply unpopular program after elections due in April, and say Athens could again fall behind in implementation. That could prompt lenders to pull the plug once the euro zone has stronger financial firewalls in place.

While there are doubts in Germany and other countries that Greece will be able to meet its commitments, including implementing 3.3 billion euros of spending cuts and tax increases, the threat of contagion from a chaotic Greek default always made a deal more likely than not, no matter how tortuous the negotiations.

Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde and ECB President Mario Draghi attended the Brussels talks, signaling they were likely to be decisive.

The private creditor bond exchange is expected to launch on March 8 and complete three days later, Athens said on Saturday. That means a 14.5-billion-euro bond repayment due on March 20 would be restructured, allowing Greece to avoid default.

“It’s a result that can be justified and that creates the preconditions to get Greece onto a sustainable return to economic health if the swap deal with private creditors is successful,” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters.

The vast majority of the funds in the 130-billion-euro program will be used to finance the bond swap and ensure Greece’s banking system remains stable; some 30 billion euros will go to “sweeteners” to get the private sector to sign up to the swap, 23 billion will go to recapitalize Greek banks.

A further 35 billion or so will allow Greece to finance the buying back of the bonds. Next to nothing will go directly to help the Greek economy.

No one is pretending it will end Greece’s problems. Figures last week showed its economy shrank 7 percent year-on-year in the last quarter of 2011, much more than expected, with further cuts likely to make matters worse.

The troika of European Commission, ECB and IMF, responsible for monitoring Greece’s reform progress, carries out quarterly reviews and could decide Athens is not meeting its commitments at any one of them.

SHANGHAI (AP) ? Apple defended its right to use the iPad trademark in China in a heated court hearing Wednesday that pitted the electronics giant against a struggling company that denies it sold the mainland China rights to the tablet’s name.

Shenzhen Proview Technology’s lawyer Xie Xianghui argued that the sale of the iPad trademark to Apple Inc. by Proview’s Taiwan affiliate in 2009 was invalid.

“Apple has no right to sell iPads under that name,” Xie said. Apple countered that Proview violated the sales contract by failing to transfer the trademark rights in mainland China.

It also contends that the Chinese LCD maker has not marketed or sold its own “IPAD,” or Internet Personal Access Device for years, thus possibly invalidating its claim to the trademark.

The hearing adjourned after a fractious four-hour session which saw the judge repeatedly admonishing both sides to observe proper court protocol as they argued across the courtroom. No date was announced for a judgment or further hearings.

Proview is suing to stop Apple selling the iPad in China under that name. It has also asked commercial authorities in many cities to stop sales of the device. So far, iPads have been pulled from shelves in some Chinese cities but there has been no sign of action at the national level.

Ma Dongxiao, another Proview lawyer, said after the hearing that the company plans to file lawsuits against Apple in more cities.

As evidence in court, Proview presented a flat, thin computer packed in a cardboard box that it said is its “IPAD.”

The company’s lawyers argued the success of the iPad had prevented Proview’s product from succeeding in China. Apple’s side noted that the iPad only began selling in 2010, long after Proview launched its product in 2000.

Apple’s attorneys said that stopping iPad sales in China would cause the company huge losses. The tablet’s popularity has benefited China through tax revenues and jobs created in its manufacturing, they said.

“They have no market, no sales, no customers. They have nothing,” Apple lawyer Qu Miao said of Proview. “The iPad is so popular that it is in short supply. We have to consider the public good.”

That, Xie said, is irrelevant.

“Whether people will go hungry because you can’t sell iPads in China is not the issue,” he said. “The court must rule according to the law. Do you absolutely have to sell the product? Can’t you sell it using a different name?”

The trademark case is highlighting mixed attitudes toward Apple in China. Chinese are just as crazy about iPads and iPhones as consumers anywhere else and the devices are manufactured in China, employing hundreds of thousands of people.

But public awareness has been growing of criticism over the labor and environmental practices of huge factories that assemble the devices. Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group, which makes iPads in China, has been under intense scrutiny after a spate of worker suicides. It recently raised wages by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.

Apple has appealed an earlier ruling in favor of Proview in a court in Shenzhen, a city in southern China’s Guangdong province. The Guangdong High Court is due to hear that case on Feb. 29.

Xie on Tuesday said that since no final decisions have been reached in various legal disputes over the issue, both sides were “still able to sit together and reach an out-of-court settlement.” Apple has shown no indication of willingness to settle.

The current trademark battle is unlikely to have much effect on sales of the iPad 2 but could affect future iterations of the device, said Xu Jia, chief editor of the Chinese magazine PC Home.

“It could affect a future iPad 3,” Xu said. “If the official products are banned from being sold in China, we will see how the products in the black market start to have very good sales.”

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, insists it holds the trademark rights to the iPad in China, having purchased them from Proview for 35,000 British pounds ($55,000) through a company set up for that purpose.

A court in Hong Kong, which has a separate legal system from mainland China, ruled in July that Proview had acted with the intention of “injuring Apple.” Proview’s lawyers argued Wednesday that any rulings in Hong Kong were not admissible in Chinese courts.
