University of Granada researchers have developed a software tool that makes an accurate estimation of the risk that a person has to suffer a heart disease. In addition, this software tool allows the performance of massive risk estimations, i.e. it helps estimating the risk that a specific population group has of suffering a heart condition. The researchers employed a sample including 3?000 patients.

Heart conditions increasingly affect working age population, which can make individuals loss potential years of work and productivity.

Understanding the risk for heart conditions by simultaneously using different equations is a key factor in heart disease prevention, which would reduce health spending in the short and long term.

An Integrated Model

According to the researchers, “during the last decade, the approaches to cardiovascular disease prevention have evolved from isolated interventions on modifiable risk factors to an integral model of intervention strategies based on previous risk quantification and stratification.”

One of the factors enabling this change is the increasing availability of tools for the quantification and stratification of the risk of suffering a cardiovascular disease; these tools evaluate a set of individual characteristics, the so-called risk factors. This is the framework of the study conducted at the University of Granada and recently published in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice.

In the field of epidemiologic studies aimed at predicting cardiovascular risk, a set of mathematical models had been developed in previous studies in the USA. The purpose of these models was to provide an estimation of the risk of suffering a cardiovascular event in the short term, i.e. 5-10 years, by assessing exposure to risk factors. University of Granada researchers used this model in their study.

The researchers performed a comparative study of the behavior of different equations applied to a group of “at-risk” patients referred to an Endocrinology Service from a primary care center in Granada, Spain. Risk factors were obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and lipid profile alterations.

Tooth Decay is caused by acid producing bacteria that has been left on our teeth. If we do not look after our mouths properly and form bad habits then the bacteria known as ?Tartar? or ?Plaque? will form a soft sticky film on our teeth leading to Tooth Decay and Gum Disease.

There are 3 layers of a tooth:

Enamel ? This is the outer layer of the tooth. Once the decay has made its way into the enamel of the tooth it will slowly make its way to the second layer of the enamel. This can take sometimes a couple of years.

Dentine ? Is the second layer of the enamel. Once the decay has made its way through to the dentine the decay will start spreading more rapidly towards the Pulp Chamber of the tooth. Most of the tooth structure can be destroyed in a matter of weeks.

Pulp/Nerve Chamber ? This is a vital area that contains the nerves of the teeth and the blood supply. As the Bacteria progresses closer to the nerve pain in the tooth will become more intense.

There are 3 Stages of Decay:

White Spot ? This is early decay. After eating the plaque becomes acidic and dissolves the tooth enamel. Fluoride toothpaste can actually help to repair the damaged enamel at this stage before it becomes a cavity.

Cavity ? If enough enamel is lost the tooth surface breaks down forming a cavity. At this stage the tooth needs repairing by a Dental Professional.

Advanced Tooth Decay ? This occurs if the decay enters the pulp chamber of the tooth it will cause inflammation, pain and eventually an abscess

Some people are more susceptible to different degrees of tooth decay depending on the shape of their teeth, and the capacity of their saliva. SAN DIEGO — Police arrested a prominent local political activist in connection to a recent Fiesta Island sex assault on Thursday. Michael Kobulnicky, the public relations spokesperson for the San Diego Tea Party, was arrested Thursday afternoon in front of his home, according to Lt. Anastasia Smith with the San Diego Police Department.

Kobulnicky is accused of a Feb. 25 abduction and sexual assault of a 56-year-old woman who was walking home near Linda Vista Road in Fiesta Island. The woman was pulled into a car and assaulted, then left on the island, police said.

Surveillance footage of the area near the assault gave police evidence to pursue a suspect. They released a picture of the suspect to the public, and many identified the suspect as Kobulnicky, police said.

Kobulnicky was booked into San Diego Central Jail on numerous felony charges, including kidnapping, sexual assault and sex with a foreign object.

A statement from the San Diego Tea Party said Kabulnicky has been on hiatus since January for personal reasons and has been relieved from his Tea Party duties during legal proceedings.

“Our hearts and our thoughts go out to the victim,” read the statement.
